OBITUARY FROM THE SHIRLEY & STOUT FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE, SEPTEMBER 13, 2010:

James E. Calabro Sr. lost his battle with ALS on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010.

He was born Nov. 30, 1934, in Peru, to Italian immigrants Jim and Mary Calabro, who preceded him in death.

He was raised in Hobart, and graduated from Hobart High School. He attended Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. There, he met and married Carol A. Ray on Oct. 29, 1955, and she survives.

They moved to Kokomo in September 1957, to start his long 35-year career at Delco’s division of General Motors as an electrical engineer.

In the early part of his career, he was issued a patent and obtained a master’s degree in engineering from Purdue. He finished his career in Milwaukee, Wis., as a quality manager and returned to Kokomo after retiring.

He was an active member of the community. He led several committees and was president of the Metropolitan Kiwanis club. He helped organize and run swim meets for local AAU swimmers. He was active in the local Soap Box Derby. During his retirement he enjoyed completing tax forms for the elderly and low-income families through the AARP volunteer service program. He was an active member of St. Patrick Church and helped organize and run fundraising events for the school.

He enjoyed sports and participated in track and football in high school and college. He was a proud member of the first football team in the history of Rose Hulman to win the championship of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Later in life, he continued his love of sports by pursuing interests in karate, running and golf. One of his greatest loves was having the opportunity to teach and play golf with his grandsons.

He and his wife of 55 years raised four children, James E. II and Donna Calabro, Kokomo, Christina A. Calabro and Dan Baron, Pinedale, Wy., Michael A. Calabro, Miami, Fla., and John S. Calabro (deceased). Grandchildren are Sancia and her husband, Matt Tonn, Denver, Colo., James E. Calabro III, Vincent Calabro, and Katharine Calabro, Kokomo; two sisters, Carmella Aspinwall, of Hobart and Margaret and her husband, Oliver Case, Kouts.
