George F. Schmidt - Class Of 1953

OBITUARY FROM SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE, FEBRUARY 12, 2012:

George F. Schmidt, 76, of Mishawaka, passed away Monday, February 6, 2012, in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross. George was born on October 28, 1935, in Gary, IN, to the late Fred A. and Violet I. (Hill) Schmidt. On June 22, 1957, in Detroit, MI, he married Gail Clark.

George is survived by Gail Schmidt of Mishawaka; daughter, Gretchen, and her husband, Tom Mueller of Seattle, WA; and son, Greg Schmidt of Kaneohe, HI. George graduated from Hobart High School in 1953 before attending the University of Michiganand graduating from Indiana University. He earned a Master's Degree from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, South Bend. George proudly served in the U.S. Army while being stationed at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Upon being honorably discharged, George went into law enforcement. After 21 years with the Indiana State Police, he retired as a sergeant on the Indiana Toll Road. Following his retirement in 1983, he worked for the St. Joseph County Sheriff Department as a Transportation Officer. Most recently, he worked at Penn High School. He thoroughly enjoyed working with the students at Penn, who respected and supported him in return. George and Gail followed many of the high school teams, using their Penn All Sports Passes constantly. He was also an avid fan of the Indiana Hoosiers.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Chapel Hill; a private ceremony with the family followed.
