John Stephens - Class Of 1959

JOHN P. “PUMPER” STEPHENS, age 70, of Hobart, passed away Friday, June 17, 2011 at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. John was a lifelong Hobart resident and graduated from Hobart High School in 1959. “Pumper” owned Pumpers Bar in Lake Station for 12 years and also formerly managed Indiana Ridge in Hobart. He currently operated Cressmoor Country Club in Hobart with his brother, Rick. John was instrumental in founding Biddy Basketball and Pop Warner in Hobart. He was an avid golfer and loved sports of all kinds.

Pumper is survived by his wife, Patti, who was “The love of his Life”, 2 daughters: Cathy Stephens of Omaha, NE, Leslie (John) Kotvasz of Valparaiso, granddaughter, Rine (Mike) McCarty of Lafayette, IN, brother, Rick (Sue) Stephens of Hobart, 2 step-sons: Jeff Doolin of Hobart and James (Karen) Doolin of Brandon, FL and nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Harold & Mary Stephens, brother, Gerry Stephens and niece, Monica Stephens Gabriel.

In lieu of flowers donations to the family would be appreciated. There will be a visitation for John on Monday, June 20, 2011 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W Old Ridge Rd, Hobart. Cremation will follow the visitation. There will be a Celebration of his Life on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with family & friends gathering at Cressmoor Country Club, 601 N.
