OBITUARY FROM POST-TRIBUNE, MARCH 3, 2009:

Douglas L. Hines, Sr., age 63 of DeMotte, Indiana passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Porter Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 4, 1945 in Gary, Indiana, the son of Aubrey James and Virginia David Hines. Douglas attended Hobart Public Schools and was retired from US Steel, Gary Works after 38 years as a Caster. His first marriage was to Catherine Diane Mills who passed away on May 24, 2003. Then, on December 4, 2007 in Francesville, Indiana, he married Sue Melcher, who survives. He was affiliated with the Francesville Christian Church. He raised horses and other farm animals on his farm and enjoyed being able to help his grandchildren participate in 4-H. He would often saddle up his horses and ride in many of the local parades, sharing his passion and love for animals.

Douglas is survived by his mother: Virginia (Fred) Groomer of North Judson, Indiana; Sue Melcher Hines, his loving wife; Douglas L. (Jackie) Hines, Jr. of Medaryville, Indiana, son; James A. (Hope) Hines of Brookston, Indiana, son; Rosie (Michael) Vereb of Valparaiso, Indiana, daughter; Candyce D. (Daymond) Hartley of Winamac, Indiana, daughter; James Melcher of Medaryville, Indiana, step-son; Steve (Tammy) Melcher of Crown Point, Indiana, step-son; 17 grand children; 2 great grandchildren; David Hines of Medaryville, Indiana, brother; Melody (John) Gibson of Valparaiso, Indiana, sister; and Michael Hines of North Judson, Indiana, brother. He was preceded in death by: Aubrey James Hines, father; and Catherine Diane Mills, first spouse.

Friends may call from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday March 4, 2009 at the Jackson Funeral Service of DeMotte, 200 Third St. SW, DeMotte, Indiana. The Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Jackson Funeral Service of DeMotte with Pastor James Ketchen officiating.
