In Memory

Daniel (Dan) Delich - Class Of 1962

OBITUARY FROM BURNS FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

Daniel "Dan" Delich, age, 79, a long time resident of Tucson and native of Northwest Indiana, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023, of heart-related complications. Born on July 27, 1944, in Gary, Indiana, Dan enjoyed a life filled with love, hard work, laughter, and maintained an enduring commitment to kindness, generosity, and his faith.

Dan was the eldest of three boys born to Peter and Anne who, along with his brother Pete, preceded him in death. He was a proud and active member of the St. Pius X Catholic Church, carrying the values of his faith into his daily life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Carol, his brother David, and his children -- Dan (Denee), Kristine (Manny), Carrie (David), and Mark (Kristi). Dan was blessed with seven grandchildren and he adored each of them -- Jackson, Katarina, Davis, Sydney, Ena, Michael, and Danielle. He cherished his two brothers, their lifetimes spent together, and their endless playful pranking of one another. He gave as good as he got.

Dan was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard in 1969 after four years of service. He spent over 50 years as a small business owner in automotive repair and insurance sales. His customers and colleagues valued his friendship, and commitment to honest service.

Dan enjoyed many accomplishments and diverse interests. Like his father and a dear uncle, he was an acclaimed high school football player and served as co-captain of his team. He took joy in hunting and fishing and later developed a fondness for woodworking. Dan was a Freemason and held dear the brotherhood and its commitment to country and charitable giving. He cared about the future of the nation and had strong opinions. Dan liked old westerns on TV, watching football on the weekends, and movies, including "The Longest Yard," "The Dirty Dozen," and "Tommy Boy.” He was a foodie and delighted in hosting family and friends, including his fellow parishioners and neighbors.

Above all else, Dan was devoted to his family. He was a loyal and loving son, brother, and husband. He was a steady and present father and grandfather. Dan’s deep and abiding love for his family was palpable and it formed the cornerstone of his long life.

In his final act of service, Dan donated his body to medical research. His final resting place will be his birthplace, Indiana.

As we remember Dan, we celebrate his unwavering dedication to his family and his commitment to his faith, fellow man, and country. His memory will serve as a guide and inspiration to those fortunate enough to have known him. God bless him. May he rest in peace.

A Memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 107 Main Street, Hobart, IN, Fr. Dominic Bertino officiating. Burns Funeral Home (Hobart) entrusted with arrangements. www.burnsfuneral.com.

Dan and I were two of the three tri-captains of Hobart High football for the class of 1962. The third was Jim Grudzinski, who died a few years ago.

I remember Coach Deal making Dan carry a football around school after he'd fumbled during a game.

I feel odd being the one remaining captain.
