Marcia Mae Speer

Marcia Mae Speer (Peck), 88, of Hobart, Indiana, passed away at home on June 26, 2023, surrounded by family. She was born in Gary, Indiana on September 3, 1934, to Myron and Edna (Cole) Peck. She was a lifelong resident of Hobart, Indiana. Marcia attended Hobart High School (’52) where she was class valedictorian. More importantly, it is where she met her beloved Phil.

Marcia graduated from Purdue University (’56) with a degree in Pharmacy. She loved working behind the counter at Walgreens and Shoal pharmacies where she was a committed member of the local care team. She loved her customers and was known to check on them at home if she had concerns that they needed assistance in taking their medication correctly.

Marcia was a faithful member of the Hobart First Christian Church for many years where she spent countless hours teaching Sunday School, vacation Bible school and leading other youth activities. She was a woman who lived her faith and taught her family to follow her example. Her home was a gathering place - always open to family and friends – especially her children’s friends.

Marcia was married to the love of her life, Phil, for 69 years during which time they were partners at home, church and work. Together, they traveled the world many times over often returning to their favorite spots in Paris and of course Walt Disney World where she enjoyed annual trips with her grandchildren

She was all about family. She loved being a grandmother and showed it in all the best ways including attending countless choir concerts, theatre productions and hockey and lacrosse games. She loved when her children traveled, and she got to have her grandchildren all to herself. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy.

Marcia will be dearly missed by so many. Family left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband, Phillip Speer; her daughter Kathryn (Smith) Speer and son Kevin (Kim) Speer; her grandchildren Stephanie, Eric and Cole; her sister-in-law Jennie Metz; nephew Curtis (Sharon) Metz and niece Shelley (Tim) Brockway and their children Alexis, Cameron, Sydney and Claire.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Myron and Edna Peck; her Aunt Evelyn (Cole) Price and Uncle Elsworth Price; and brother-in-law Dr. Clyde (Jennie) Metz.

Visitation for Marcia will be Friday, June 30, 2023, from 4-7:00 p.m., at Burns Funeral Home, 701 East 7th Street, Hobart, IN 46342. Funeral service will be held Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Burns (Hobart), Pastor Steve Campbell officiating. Interment at Hobart Cemetery, Front Street, Hobart, IN. www.burnsfuneral.com.
