Marjorie Wegmet (Ramsey) - Class Of 1947

Marjorie Jean Ramsey, age 93, Wilmore, Kentucky and formerly of Charleston, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky.  She was born October 31, 1929, in Hobart, Indiana, daughter of Joseph Simon and Alvida Ruby (Peterson) Wegmet.  Marjorie married Charles Estel Ramsey in December 1951, he passed away on April 29, 2017.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Laurel Ramsey Kniskern, Chuck Ramsey, Joyce Ramsey, Martha (Mike) Wanous and Joe Ramsey; daughter-in-law, Elise Ramsey; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Charles Ramsey; parents, Joseph and Alvida Wegment; son, Ken Ramsey; brother, Joseph Richard Wegmet; half-brothers, Winston, Norman, and Howard Wegmet; son-in-law, Jonathan Kniskern.

Marjorie was a graduate of Hobart High School, class of 1947.  She graduated, 1951, from Wesley Memorial Nursing School (Northwestern School of Nursing in Chicago) as a proud member of “Class Q”.  Marjorie and Charles traveled, as his duties as a naval medical officer required.  They selected Charleston as their place to set down roots in 1954, home for 60 years before moving to Kentucky in 2015.

Marjorie was the mother of 6 children and continued her education at Eastern Illinois University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees before working in various capacities as an Adoption Social Worker.  She was active in the community for Stephen Ministries and as a quilter at Wesley United Methodist Church.  Marjorie was a member of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) in both Charleston and Kentucky for 55 years.  She was a volunteer with 4-H as her children participated, and a volunteer at Lincoln Log Cabin State Park.  Marjorie was a book lover, supporter of libraries throughout her life and very organized.  She could pack her family of eight in a nine-passenger station wagon for a vacation.  Marjorie kept the contact information for branches of her extended family as well as for her Class Q nursing school classmates through their sixtieth reunion.  At the time of her death, she kept notes regarding the names, birthdates of staff and new residents within her assisted living complex, so she could deliver a birthday card or a welcome note.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2204 Fourth Street, Charleston, IL with Rev. Bradley Shumaker presiding.  Visitation will be at the church from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and will include light refreshments.  

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, the Charleston Carnegie Public Library or a charity of the donor’s choice.
