Edward Huml - Class Of 1944

OBITUARY FROM OREGONIAN (PORTLAND, OR) WEBSITE:

Edward Earl Huml passed on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at 81 years old.

Ed was born in Gary, Ind., as the sixth of seven children in 1925. While a senior in Hobart High School, and only 17 years old, he received his draft notice for service in World War II. While many of his friends joined the Army, Ed decided that the Navy was the place that he wanted to be. He served over two years as a yeoman in the Pacific on the destroyer USS Rowe.

After his discharge, he returned home to Indiana and went to work for the EJ&J railroad as a switchman. He fell in love with the Pacific Northwest when he vacationed to the area to visit his sister. He found that he could play golf in December. Ed moved to Portland soon after.

Ed was introduced to Agnes Galberth through some mutual friends. They were married in the autumn of 1959. Ed and Agnes have three children, Gabrielle, Rachael and Clayton. Ed spent many years involved in local Boy Scout Troop 105, providing resources and inspiration for fundraising, camping and mentoring of the boys. He was a lifetime VFW member.

Ed retired before he was 50 and set his sights on spending his free time with two of his greatest passions: golf and gardening. For many years, he worked part time as a marshal at a local golf course. He also frequently traveled around Oregon and Washington on extended outings with his golf partners. In 1988, he realized a long time dream to play some of the great golf courses of Scotland - and yes, St. Andrews was on the list. He spent two weeks with fellow duffers golfing some of the most storied courses in Scotland.

Ed had the proverbial green thumb. He put this talent to good use on his suburban acreage by growing fresh vegetables, landscaping foliage and flowers of all kinds. To mate his two hobbies, he cultivated his very own 500 square foot private putting green, complete with cups and a flag from Palm Beach (a gift from a fellow golf lover).

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, his three children, two sisters, Adeline and Helen, five grandchildren, one great grandchild and various nieces and nephews.

Ed's dedication to the environment through recycle, reduce and reuse is continued in death with the donation of his person to Biogift Anatomical Donor for medical research. Per his request, there will be no memorial. His ashes will be interred in Willamette National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests all remembrances be sent to Legacy Hopewell House, 6171 S.W. Capital Hwy., Portland, OR, 97239.

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend; you are greatly missed by all.
