Don Richard "Rick" Schiller - Class Of 1974

OBITUARY FROM GEISEN FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE, JANUARY 26, 2017:

Donald Richard “Rick” Schiller, age 60, of Hobart, IN, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
 
Rick was born September 13, 1956 in Gary, IN, first son for Donald J. and Joyce June Schiller. Rick is survived by his wife: Cynthia “Cindy” of 29 years; daughter: Alexa “Lexi” Schiller, age 21, of Muncie, IN; and son: Thomas J. “TJ” Schiller, age 19, of Hobart, IN. Rick has three living siblings: Dawn Shertzer and husband (Robin) Shertzer of Sun Lakes, AZ, Lisa Shirk and (Joseph) Shirk of Bartlett, IL, and Gregory Schiller and wife (Leslie) of West Chester, OH. Rick has numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Rick and his cousin Lanny were especially close. Rick admired and respected Lanny and considered him a brother. Rick’s reverence for their relationship was genuine. Rick was preceded in death by his father: Donald J. Schiller and his mother: Joyce June Gore.
 
Rick had a strong work ethic and worked at various jobs since he was 8 years old. Rick loved the band Styx and enjoyed various concerts and events during his healthy years. He was a graduate of Hobart High School and received his Associates Degree from Prairie State College. Rick retired due to medical reasons from Inland Steel after 27 years of service as a Maintenance Supervisor. Rick was good at his job and formed many lasting friendships while employed at Inland Steel. After retirement, Rick stayed as active and involved as possible in his family’s lives with various coaching and school related events. Rick felt privileged to be able to have pivotal influence in raising Lexi and TJ and he was grateful to God for this important role in helping to shape his children. He loved God, his family, and had such a love of fresh-water fishing. Rick and Lanny enjoyed several fishing trips together and created many memories that Rick cherished and kept close to his heart. Rick was an avid Cubs fan his entire life and you would be hard pressed to find a more devoted fan than Rick. Rick was thrilled to be able to witness the Cubs winning the World Series during his lifetime. Rick fought a courageous battle with numerous physical illnesses. Above all else, Rick loved and was devoted to his wife and children.
 
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave./South St., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 2:00 PM until the time of the Funeral Service at 5:00 PM with Pastor Tom Shanahan officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home with cremation to follow.
