In Memory

Judy Tidwell (Edelen) - Class Of 1970

OBITUARY FROM THE COURIER-JOURNAL (LOUISVILLE, KY) WEBSITE:

Judith Ann (Tidwell) Edelen, age 70, passed away at home on the evening of September the 21st with husband and daughters by her side. This followed a diagnosis of lymphoma in February.

She went to Hobart High School (IN), attended Manchester College, and graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in social work. She began her career as a social worker for the state of Kentucky and then turned her focus to raising a family while substitute teaching. She later received her Master’s in Education from the University of Louisville. Judy was a teacher at Foster Academy Elementary for 24 years, first in the 3rd grade, and then specializing in reading recovery. She loved teaching kids how to read!

Outside of work, she enjoyed quilting, gardening, camping and traveling out West with her husband, spending time with family, hosting friends for 39 years at the longest day of the year party in Raywick, KY, and reading. She and her husband had been in the same book club for the past 18 years with 4 other close friends. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas “Bill” and Faith (Grabill) Tidwell of Hobart, IN, and brother, Dallas Tidwell. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Michael J. Edelen, who could always make her laugh; daughters, Jennie Condra (David), Amy Edelen (Jessica); grandchildren, Dinah and Levi Condra, Gus Edelen; sisters, Nancy Blanford (Tom) and Barbara Vickers; sister-in-law, Edie Tidwell; seven sweet nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends, all of whom showered her with love and attention over the past several months. Judy was truly in awe of the outpouring of love she received. This was a clear reflection of the generosity and non-judgmental love that she showed others. She was quoted as saying “I was put on this earth to please”. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Sandy and Kristen, as well as her Hosparus team for giving not just Judy, but her immediate family, such tender care over the last few months.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. Joseph Children’s Home or Hosparus Health of Louisville. A graveside service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery on October 22nd at 12:00, with a celebration of life to follow at 1:00 where family will receive friends and loved ones. Guests are invited to the All Peoples Church, 4936 Brownsboro Rd, to share a potluck meal and celebrate Judy’s life with stories, laughter, music, and fellowship.
