Charleen Marie Schmelter, 62, of Ottawa, died on Thursday morning, January 23, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 27, in St. Francis of Assisi Church in Ottawa, with the Rev. Michael Adrie, officiating. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Ottawa. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Mueller Funeral Home.

Char was born on March 1, 1951, in Hobart, Indiana, to Richard and Rose (Cardella) Boughamer. She received her Bachelor's in Education Degree from Indiana University. She married Robert I. Schmelter on August 4, 1973, at St. Bridgette's Church in Hobart, Indiana. She was a Special Education Teacher in the Ottawa Elementary Schools for 22 years. Char was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Erin (Michael) Smyrniotis, of Streamwood, and Laura (James) Garwood, of Naperville, and two sons, Joseph Schmelter, of Ottawa, and Robert J. (and his fiancé, Kalah Rosengren) of San Diego, CA, her new grandson, Brody Garwood, her dog, Bud, a cousin Judy Lemke, an aunt, Ann Rubino, and many dear, longtime friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, on February 10, 2005, and her parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

Pallbearers will be: Bill, Drew, and Will Burns, Steve Novario, Jeff Lemke, Grant Lewis, Bob Keller, Robert Sipula, and Brandon Duffin.
