Harold Andrews, 28 of Gary, Ind., who was born and reared in Elkhart was killed with his wife, the former Gertrude Fredburg, at 8 a.m. today when their auto was struck by a Pennsylvania train on a crossing at Gary. Andrews, who was credit manager for a Gary jewelry store, was driving to his work from their home in Hobart, Ind. His wife accompanied him this morning intending to do some Christmas shopping in Gary. Mrs. Andrews was 27 years old. She taught at Liverpool township school in the country three miles from their home in Hobart. Word of the tragedy was received soon after it occurred by Andrews' parents. Mr. And Mrs. C. W. Andrews, who live on a farm three miles southwest of Jamestown, in Baugo Township. The victims of the tragedy were to arrive tomorrow at the home of his parents, to spend Christmas.

Police who investigated the accident held Walter Sayger, 21, watchman at the crossing, on a manslaughter charge, Officers said they were informed the gates at the crossing had not been lowered when the train approached. Officers said the crossing watchman admitted failing to lower the gates but said he was unaware of the trains approach. A heavy fog enveloped this region this morning and police expressed the belief that both the watchman and victims of the accident failed to see the on coming train.

Until 12 years ago, the Andrews family lived in Elkhart at 204 Union Street. Mr. Andrews was born Dec. 17, 1905, in Elkhart. The young man attended Elkhart High School for two years, and was graduated from Jamestown High School in 1926. For a time he was a clerk in the Clark & Russell drug store, and he also was employed in a New York Central office here. On Aug. 22, 1926, he was married to Gertrude Fredburg of Hobart, Ind., daughter of Mr. And Mrs. August Fredburg. Mr. Andrews was employed as a credit manager in a jewelry store in Gary before his death. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. William McOmber of Hobart. Mrs. Andrews leaves her parents and two brothers, Carl and Raymond Fredburg.
