nnabel Doris Inscho Thomae was born February 17, 1919. She died October 24, 2016 at the age of 97.
She was preceded in homegoing by her husband, Bertus Thomae, Jr., her parents Doris White Inscho and Leland S Inscho, Sr., and her sister, Marjorie McFarland Coppage. All of them were beloved.
She is survived by her brother, Leland S. Inscho, Jr. (Colorado), her sister, Eleanor Inscho Medon (Delaware), her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews.
She and Bertus had 3 children: Marvin (Helen) Thomae, LaPorte, IN, Carol (Harvey) Thomae Hicks, Phoenix,
AZ and Joyce (Robert) Thomae Kirk, Roswell, GA. They had 7 grandchildren: Todd (Michelle) Thomae, LaPorte, IN, Scott (Mindy) Thomae, Germantown, OH, Laura Thomae Hopkins, Ann Arbor, MI, Brittany (Dustin) Kirk McCormick, Marietta, GA, Kristyn (Mike) Thomae Schauer, Oklahoma City, OK, Andrew Kirk, Woodstock, GA; and Jordan Hicks, Phoenix, AZ.
They had 12 great grandchildren: Cayley Hopkins, Hunter Thomae, Autumn Thomae, Caleb Thomae, Lincoln Thomae, Eli Thomae, Ella Thomae, Elle Thomae, Ollyanna Schauer, Audrey McCormick, Beau Schauer and J. Finley McCormick....with an, as yet, unnamed Schauer on the way.
She and Bert were known and loved for their interest in young people, having been youth sponsors and Sunday School teachers at Portage Community Church. They supported Christian Haven Home for displaced teens in Wheatfield, IN (now White's) for 60 years. She worked 25 years at Portage High School, retiring as head cook. After Bert passed, Annabel continued her influence on children by helping all of her children raise their children, flying across country whenever a baby sitter was urgently needed.
She was a lover of opera, wildlife conservancy, Audubon, hiking, nature in general, and adventurous international travel. She was an artist in paint and in crochet. We all have her oils and her afghans as do many sick children and elderly patients. Gigi (as she was eventually called) was an adored matriarch, as fun was generally on the day's agenda. She supported each child in their interests whether music, art, academics or sports. You always knew she would be there for you.
She was so honored in her last years by visits, cards, calls and well wishes by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, and friends. She had a rip roarin', full house 90th birthday reunion on the Lake Michigan that she loved. This is the honorarium you all left her: you honored her when she was alive. She loved you all.
She will be missed by us, but yet she is also part and fiber of those she left behind. l She's hiking the hills of heaven singing God's praises. No resting in peace for this dynamo! Aging was irritatingly inactive for her; though in her usual way, she faced it with grace and courage. She is active again, at last, in God's eternity.
A private family service will be held in Indiana at the Dunes National Lakeshore that she loved. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Audubon Conservation or to the Dunes National Lakeshore Society.
