Donald (Don) Welton - Class Of 1976

Donald (Don) Wayne Welton, passed away peacefully June 4, 2020 after a brave battle with Glioblastoma

Don was born on December 4, 1957 to James Welton and LaVerne (Turley) Welton in Gary Indiana. He graduated from Hobart High School in 1976. Don always had a servants heart and a love of people. His desire was to serve the Lord. He attended Olivet University in Bourbonnais, Illinois from 1976 - 1978, Mid America Nazarene University in Kansas City, KS in 1979. He proudly served in the Air Force for 1982 - 1985. He then attended Bible College in Colorado from 1985 - 1987.

On April 9, 1985 he was blessed with his precious daughter Amy Lynn, whom he loved dearly. Amy remembers her dad as being very charismatic.

His siblings remember Don as being imaginative, determined and fun!

Amongst his many accomplishments, he planted and Pastored Temple Terrace Church of the Nazarene, in Tampa Florida from 1987 - 1990, he then Pastored Lockhart Church of the Nazarene from 1998 - 2000 and Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Decatur Alabama for a short time. He also attended Riverside City College in Riverside (RCC), California from 2012 - 2014 earning an Associate in Science in Photography.

Being a "numbers guy" he developed an interest in financial planning / investments. He was employed by Edward Jones and American Express. Don had many interests and hobbies, he loved the arts and passionately pursued photography, He competed at state and regional levels where he won several awards. One of his favorite places to photograph was RCC, where his work is displayed on banners throughout the campus.

Don was an avid baseball fan, he loved the Saint Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed running and participated in track, in both high school and college. He was a beloved member of the Toastmasters, Riverside Breakfast Club 1348 where he also won many awards. Some of his speeches can be seen on Youtube.com - Don Welton toastmaster speeches

In November of 2012 he met the love of his life, Catherine, as Don expressed in his proposal to her on April 19, 2012:

"Yes, Flowers Are Nice.
But, If I Could Have My Dream.
It Would Be The Perfect Woman
With The Aim To Form A Team".

They married June 20, 2012, they lived, loved and laughed together for nearly 8 years. They were a team, unwavering in their love for the Lord. They enjoyed walking, traveling, attending performances & musicals. Cathy was both his favorite photograph assistant and subject. Then Don was diagnosed, though the journey was difficult, they battled courageously together as they held onto the quote "His Will, Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else".

They attended The Arlington Church of the Nazarene, Riverside California, where they were supported and loved when they needed them most. The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care and support they received from Kaiser Permanente Hospice.

Don was predeceased by his father James, brother William and grandparents. He is survived by his mother LaVerne (Turley) Welton, his beloved wife Catherine Ann (Flaherty) Welton , daughter Amy Lynn Welton, siblings, Debbie (Mike) Travis, Jim (Cheryl) Welton, and Mary (Stan) Stepancevich.

A Memorial service will be held at The Church of the Nazarene, 5475 Arlington Avenue, Riverside, CA 92504 on Monday June 15, 2020 at 1:00 PM. Don's final resting place will be at March ASB.
