After graduating from Hobart High School in 1954, she worked as a medical secretary at US Steel Hospital in Gary where she specialized in shorthand, helping doctors care for injured plant workers. Around the same time she met Jim on a blind date and then continued dating while Jim attended Pharmacy school at Purdue University. Over 20 years, Joyce helped Jim operate drug stores as book keeper and payroll director. Joyce also helped in the community in many ways. She was a teacher's aide for testing children just starting school and also helped with dozens of Tri-Kappa women's fundraisers. Joyce was a great cook and teacher while showing her kids how to cook and bake many dishes. Joyce also enjoyed spending time with her 17 grand and great-grandchildren at school, church and sporting events, and was known for her long, loving hugs.
