Herbert “Herb” Johnson, age 76 of Valparaiso, IN passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016. He was born on November 22, 1939 in Hobart, IN to Harry & Irene (McAuliffe) Johnson who precede him in death. He is survived by his wife Rita (Jesuit) Johnson; children, Laura (Brian) Grabowski, Eric Johnson, Karen Johnson and Mary Roy; grandchildren, Rachael, Jacob, Zachary, Logan, Spencer, Hunter, Joshua, Mitchell, Abigail and Lucas. Herb also has many cousins, extended family, friends and his dog, Dutchess.

Herb retired from the Cook County Forest Preserve Maintenance and Operations were he was the assistant superintendent for over 30 years. Herb was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and dog trainer. He was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed playing baseball. Herb also enjoyed traveling and cruising with his wife. Herb was a sports addict and loved watching Michigan State, his alma mater, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N Calumet Road, Chesterton, IN 46304, with Father James Meade officiating. Burial to follow at Chesterton Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, March 21, 2016 from 9:00 am until 10:30 am at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Memorial donations in Herb’s honor may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, Chesterton, IN 46304. Online condolences to the family may be left at www.ee-fh.com.
