Paul Addison (1970)

My friend from junior high and high school, Louis Layhew, died last week. I knew him as Bud, and some people called him Louie or Buddy. Although he was three years older than I was, we had some common interests. One was that we had a band, and he had drums and a car, so he could haul us to gigs when we were 14 and too young to drive.

He worked at the Conoco station on Central Avenue in East Gary (now Lake Station) his senior year, and sometimes I went there with him after school and hung out until he closed at 9 pm. This is a guy who rebuilt the automatic transmission in his 1962 Mercury when he was 17. He taught me several things about driving, as he hung out a lot with truck drivers, such as flashing your lights after someone has passed you to let them know it's OK to get back into the right lane. He also taught me the habit of backing into a parking space, making it easier to get out, especially if it was bad weather when you got back to your car.

He had a very outgoing personality. My brother Roger, Bud and I drove (straight through overnight) to Miami Beach one summer (the day I got my driver's license, actually) to stay for a week; within a half hour of the time we arrived, he had organized a water volleyball game in the pool with about a dozen people playing.

After a mutual friend of ours, Robin Cunningham, passed away a few years ago, I became Facebook friends with Pat Chaires, Bud's ex-wife. I had attended their wedding, but I lost touch with him after that.

Bud was quite an interesting guy. He will be missed.

Bud was a real sweet guy. Always kind & always had a smile on his face. Had a bit of a crush on him when I was a kid. Fun to be around. You're really going to be missed!
