Kathleen (Kathy) Zeimis - Class Of 1973

Kathleen “Kathy” Ann Zeimis, 65, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at her home of natural causes.

No services have been scheduled.

Kathy was born May 24, 1955, in Gary, Ind to George Zeimis and Janet Lawrence Zeimis. She was raised in Gary, Ind and was a graduate of the 1973 class of Hobart High School. Following high school Kathy attended Ball State College and received her bachelor’s in nursing from Valparaiso University in Indiana.

Kathy began her career as a nurse at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso, Ind. Her career in nursing spanned over 30 years, serving others at hospitals and nursing homes in Valparaiso, Ind, Marshalltown, Grinnell and Newton, IA before retiring in 2019. She was a caring individual who dedicated her time to helping others. She adored her nephews whom she helped to raise.

In 1997, Kathy traveled to China for two weeks, with her good friend Phyllis Edgecomb, to bring home her daughter, Annie. The two moved to Grinnell in 2000 to be closer to family. She was a proud mother and loved following Annie in all her activities, she especially enjoyed watching her dance.

Kathy battled with mental illness for most of her life. She is finally at peace with her Lord and no longer suffering. The family would like to personally thank Jeanne Hanson for her friendship and all she has done caring for Kathy through the many decades. Your friendship and care have truly been appreciated.

Kathy is survived by her daughter Annie (Geert Boelen) Zeimis; siblings Ray (Sue) Zeimis of Fayetteville, NC, Paula Rhodes of Ft. Wayne, Ind, and Janice (Steve) Lyons of Iowa City, IA; nephews Todd Rhodes, Jerod (Becky) and their son Maddox Lyons, and Justin Lyons; lifelong friend and family friend for years Jeanne Hanson; and new friend Stacey Walker and her son E. J. Utterback, whom she considered an adopted grandson. She is preceded in death by her parents, and Kyle Moore who was like a son to her through Annie and his many years of friendship.
