PETER W. KELLY Linton, Indiana Formerly Hobart, Indiana Peter W. Kelly age 61, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. Peter was employed at USX. He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and member of Miller Dunes American Legion Post #269.
He is survived by his wife, Jamice Kelly; 2 sons, Bryan (Niky) Kelly and Michael (Lisa) Kelly, both of Schereville, and their mother, Patricia Hill; 1 grandson, Bryan Kelly Jr., of Schereville; 1 step-daughter, Nikki (Dave) Peach of Hobart; 1 brother, John Kelly of Gary; 2 step grandchildren, Tabitha and Tiffinie Peach; also 1 step great granddaughter, Ta'Lyan, all of Hobart; 1 stepson, Steven J. Puza; and many other family and friends. Peter is preceded in death by wife Barbara A. Kelly, his parents William and Edith Kelly, and Step-daughter Melissa L. Puza.
Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2009 at the Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Hobart. Pete and I were friends from the first grade on. As children, we spent a lot of time playing and riding bikes together. When we were 12, and in the 7th grade, I fell through the ice and into Lake George, not far from the dam. Pete was nearby and tried to help me get out by laying on the ice, so I could grab his leg. That plan didn't work and Pete was also pulled into the lake. Pete, being lighter and having lighter clothes, managed to get out and once again wanted me to use his leg in an effort to get out. I knew that it was going to have the same result and told him to get away and get to shore. He resisted, but finally I convinced him to leave me and get to safety. What else can I say about a friend that would ignore his own safety for that of a friend. Of course, Pete was even more special to me after that. I miss you Pete!
