Dr. Kenneth (Ken) Black - Class Of 1965

OBITUARY INFORMATION FROM REES FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

Dr. Kenneth A. Black, M.D., age 77, a 40-year resident of Valparaiso passed away Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the VNA Hospice Center.  He was born on October 11, 1947, in Gary, Indiana to the late Richard and Betty Black.  Ken grew up in Hobart and graduated from Hobart High School in 1965.   After high school, Ken attended Indiana University and IU School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree. He completed his residency in family practice. He joined Portage Medical Group in 1976 where he was blessed with many dedicated partners. Ken, Jackie, and Susan Reese built a thriving practice and successfully ran it together for over 25 years, retiring in 2011. His entire career was spent with Porter Memorial Hospital where he served in many leadership roles. He was the former medical director for the VNA in Valparaiso and former team physician for Portage Schools. Ken was dedicated to the health of his patients and student athletes and was passionate about the VNA services and care they rendered to his homebound patients. Ken was an avid IU fan. His favorite companions were his dogs and he enjoyed his time he was able to spend at his lake house on Christie Lake in Michigan.  Ken had great pride in his children and loved being a father.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jackie Black (nee Clem) of Valparaiso, IN; one son, Richard (Saren) Black of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; one daughter, Cassandra (Christopher) Black of Williams, OR; brother-in-law, Mike (the late Debbie) Clem of Portage, IN; one sister-in-law Karen (Tony) Vuko of Portage, IN; two grandchildren, Calen Black and Ahijah Allison, former wife, Bonita Leckie of Fort Myers, FL, and numerous other family members and lifelong friends.
