David Lyle Storey, affectionately known as “Beaver” by family and friends, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at 1:32 p.m. at Porter Healthcare in Valparaiso, Indiana, with his three children by his side. He was 76 years old.
David was born on November 3, 1949, in Gary, Indiana. Throughout his life, he was known for his quirky sense of humor, kind heart, and unique personality. He had a way of making people laugh, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.
An outdoorsman at heart, David found joy in fishing, bicycling, and spending time in nature or on a beach. He was an avid reader and lifelong learner who never lost his curiosity about the world around him, taking a special interest in places abroad like Egypt. Halloween was his favorite holiday, and he looked forward to it every year with enthusiasm and excitement.
One of David’s greatest joys was his work with the Portage Parks Department. He took immense pride in maintaining the community’s baseball fields and helping create memorable experiences for local families. He especially loved being involved with the annual Haunted Hayride, where his passion for Halloween and community spirit came together.
David is survived by his children, David Storey, Candi Storey, and Matt Storey (Melissa Storey); and his beloved grandsons, (DAVID) Davey Storey, Matthew Storey, Draven Storey, Alex Storey, Max Storey, Ryan Storey, Lucas Storey, (CANDI) Zachary Thibodeaux, (MATT) Grant Storey, and Ford Storey
The family takes comfort in knowing that David’s final moments were spent surrounded by the love of his children. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
