Obituary for Richard A. Sapper
Richard “Rick” A. Sapper born January 27, 1948, passed away September 23, 2025, at the age of 77 years at St. Mary’s Hospital, Hobart surrounded by family.
He was a 1967 graduate of Hobart High School. Rick married the love of his life, Evelyn (nee Streit) Sapper on July 13, 1974. They had three children, Alan, Jen and Fred.
Rick served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He retired from Bethlehem Steel where he loaded trucks and from Sapper’s Farm Market where he worked in the fields. During his younger years he was an active 4-H member and was at the Lake County Fair, showing his cattle from the family farm for many years.
Rick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobart and the Hobart American Legion Post 54.
He was preceded in death by his son, Richard “Alan” Sapper II, parents, John and Fran Sapper and in-laws, Norman and Audrey Streit, brother-in-law, Thomas Parry, former daughter-in-law, Christy (Todd) Sapper, cousin, Sue Staples.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (nee Streit) Sapper of 51 years; children, Jennifer (Bil) Mack, Fred (Kristin) Sapper, daughter-in-law, Heather Sapper; He was a loving “PAPA” to his grandchildren, Richie & Nicky Sapper, Taeler, Tre, Tori (Troy Bolds) Mack, Jacob & Jada Sapper; great-grandchildren, Montell and Melody Bolds; sisters, Mary Beth Parry and Janet (Mike) Kraynik, and good friend, Danny Lines. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Services for Rick will take place at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory 701 East 7th Street Hobart, Indiana 46342.
Visitation will be September 26, 2025, from 3-7 pm. The funeral will Saturday, September 27 at 9:30 am. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville, Indiana, with Pastor Nathan Kramer officiating.
