James (Jim) Nichols - Class Of 1951

INFORMATION FROM REES FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

James Richard Nichols, age 92, of Hobart passed away on October 9, 2025. Jim was born June 5, 1933, to Virgil and Edna Nichols in Gary, Indiana. He graduated from Hobart High School, class of 1951. Jim attended Indiana State College and was employed at Lake Wholesalers/ Reserve Supply for 37 years.  He retired from Pioneer Lumber after 10 years. Jim was a man of great faith and practiced his faith with great devotion throughout his life.  He was a longtime member of Hobart First Christian Church where he served as treasurer, a deacon, a member of the Builders Class, and on many committees.  Later, he attended Deep River Church of Christ.

Jim was an active member of the YMCA and the Maria Reiner Senior Center. Jim was involved with his son in Boy Scout Troop 42. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop and was happiest when working on a project. He was a real-life McGyver and if anything broke, Papa could fix it. Jim proudly served in the Army during the Korean conflict and was privileged to attend the 85th Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. June 6, 2018.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha (Jordan), Son Richard (Jeanine) Nichols, daughter Barbara (Jeff) Achauer, Grandchildren Donald, Stephanie, Zachary, Christopher Nichols of Texas and Ashley (Jeremy) Galante and Jason (Shae) Achauer and great grandchildren Juliana Galante and Jordan Achauer, all of Ohio.  Sister Virginia (William) Johnson and several nieces and nephews also survive.  

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Lowell & Verna Jordan, Don and Marilyn Jean Mundell and David Jordan.

Visitation for Jim will be held Sunday October 19, 2025, from 4-8 pm at Rees Funeral Home 600 W. Old Ridge Road Hobart, Indiana 46342. His Funeral Service will be Monday October 20, 2025, at 11 am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery. 

Memorial gifts may be given to the Maria Reiner Senior Center 705 East 4th Street Hobart, Indiana 46342 in lieu of flowers.
