Sue Bagley Helm
Age 79 passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the University of Chicago. She was born on November 18, 1944, to the late Horace and Catherine (nee Rubenstahl) Helm in Youngstown, Ohio. Sue lived on California St., Hobart all the time she was in school. Sue was a very talented and intelligent women. She was a 1963 Hobart High School graduate where she was named Salutatorian. She spent 4 yrs. at Purdue University where she graduated in 1967. She taught Art in Indianapolis for 2yrs. Sue lived several years in Denver Colorado, Raleigh, North Carolina and Dallas, Texas then moved to Porter/Chesterton in 2007. Sue and her life partner, Joseph E. Vargo, were separated for 40 yrs after high school. Then, they reconnected at their 40th high school reunion in September 2003 and they spent 20 loving years together. She accompanied Joe on repeated trips to: Santa Fe, New Mexico, & Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon N.P., White Sands N.P., Yellowstone & Grand Teton N.P., Shenadoah N.P., Petrified Forest N.P., Congaree N.P. in South Carolina, Natural Bridges N.P., Utah, Women’s Rights Nat. Hist. PK in Seneca Falls, New York and many other national parks. Sue loved spending time with Joseph. She was an avid Star Trek and Harry Potter fan. She will be remembered as a loving companion, sister, aunt and friend. Note from Joseph- “We will always be together.”
She is survived by her partner of 20 yrs., Joseph E. Vargo of Porter, IN. Joe Vargo, originally of Hobart, is devastated by her unforeseen loss he is trying, with great difficulty, to cope with the reality he is faced with a huge void in his life and realizes that he is entering a “New Phase” of his life; beloved brother, James (Wanda) Helm of Elmwood, IN.; sister, Catherine Grace nee Marjorie Helm of New York City, NY ; niece, Pam (Steven) Sarlitto; Canton TWP, Michigan, and nephews Robert Helm of Elwood and David Helm of Winchester, Kentucky; seven grand and 8 great-grands nieces and nephews; lifelong friend, Paula Howard of Dallas, Texas and many other family members and friends.
She follows the death of her father, Horace Helm; mother, Catherine (nee Rubernstahl) Helm.
A funeral service for Sue will be held Saturday, August 10,2024 at 11:00 a.m. Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart, Indiana 46342. Burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation for Sue will be held Friday, August 9 ,2024 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. also at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
