Maxine Bercaw (Hutchens) - Class Of 1952

Maxine J. Hutchens, of Hobart, Indiana passed away May 21, 2024. She was born January 19, 1932, in South Bend, Indiana and raised by her loving parents Theodora and Herbert Bercaw. Maxine met Robert T. “Hutch” Hutchens on the front steps of First United Methodist Church in Hobart, and they became long time Hobart residents. Maxine and Hutch were lovingly married for 62 years. In Maxine’s life she was very active in the church and was even baptized along with her grandsons. She enjoyed spending time with her family, walking the lake front along Lake George, and spending time at Bass Lake in their family cabin. She always enjoyed Sunday morning breakfast after church with Hutch with the grandkids. Family and tradition were very important to Maxine, and she made a lifetime of wonderful memories for her children and grandchildren, even if it was something as simple as playing Yahtzee,10,000, solitaire or doing a crossword puzzle. She loved to get ready for all the big holidays. Another favorite past time was shopping, especially for jewelry! She was a frequent customer at O’Dell-Smith in Hobart. She loved to travel and had visited several states visiting family but a few special places to note were the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, Grand Canyon, Florida, Arizona, Disneyland California, Texas, Tennessee, and Canada.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents; Herbert Bercaw and Theodora Dena Bercaw, husband; Robert T. “Hutch” Hutchens, biological mother; Evelyn Lorraine Phillips, and siblings; Mary Katherine, Robert Lee, Margret, Neil, Russell, Mearl, Victor. Grandson; Dustin E. Oglesby.

She is survived by her 7 children; Robert “Bobby” Paul (Chris) Hutchens, Mark (Carrie) Hutchens, Dean Hutchens, David (Rhonda) Hutchens, Craig Hutchens, Karen (Jim) Long, Daryl (Gladys) Hutchens. Grandchildren; Shanon (Dan) Mekola, Chad (Christian) Hutchens, Wade (Cassie) Oglesby, Britney (Adam) Martin, Jakob (Kayla) Oglesby, Jamie (Kat) Long, Shelby (Tamara) Long, Kyle Long, Adrian Long, Jeff (Alli) Hutchens, Talea (Ian) Miser, Faith (Tyler) Milton, Nolan Hutchens, 27 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024, from 4 PM – 6 PM with a time of sharing at 6 PM at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory 701 East 7th Street Hobart, Indiana 46342. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Maxine’s memory to your charity of choice.
