In Memory

Anton (Tony) Malmquist - Class Of 1958

OBITUARY FROM CROWN CREMATION SERVICES:

In the late hours of January 23rd, 2024, Tony exhaled for the last time here, surrounded by his family and took his next oxygen free inhale of breath in heaven.

Tony was born February 13th, 1940 to Anton and Thelma (Burris) Malmquist Sr. A day early Valentine’s Day gift for his parents, he was the first born son of the couple. He was one of six children and was often called “Tony boy” by his siblings growing up. He was born and raised his whole life in Hobart and graduated in 1958. He met his wife Joyce (Hayes) and they were married June 16th, 1962 until her passing in 2015. He worked 30 years for US Steel before retiring, only to rehire to teach safety classes for the mill during some of his retirement. A die hard Hobart brickies football fan, he prided himself in missing only 2 games thru a 31 year stretch of all their home and away games. He had a love for 50’s music and was a fantastic dancer and could jitterbug like no one else. Tony and his wife were known for their infamous dance they performed to the song whispering bells. Tony and his wife Joyce spent several of their younger years performing at many Jim dandy dances and dancing at the peppermint twist. His love for the 50’s also produced one of his other great loves, his 1956 Ford. He restored the car to a beautiful colonial white and Berkshire green and gave it the name “Party Doll”. Tony and his masterpiece work rarely missed a car show and won hundreds of trophies thru the years. Tony was an avid sports fan, and he also loved Disney and spent many vacations there just to get to experience his all time favorite ride of the Pirates of the Caribbean. No wait time was ever too long for him when it came to that ride. Tony loved his TV shows. From Andy Griffith all the way to any western ever made, he loved sitting in his chair and watching them over and over again. One of his all time favorite movies was Tombstone. Watching it with him meant you got to hear every line of the movie as he recited it word for word. “You’re no daisy at all”. He was a sucker for a Dunkin iced latte, and you could always find sweets by his chair (or the remnants that were left after he got a hold of them). Tony was always the sharpest dressed man in the room and had the most beautiful hair that was never out of place. He earned his “Pimp” nickname because of his fancy sharp attire, bling jewelry, always smelled amazing and not a flaw to be had. Tony could be found cruising around in his pretty Cadillacs he owned thru the years when not in his iconic ’56.

The void this world will now experience because of Tony no longer being in it is a great one, but heaven sure gained one amazing man to enjoy until someday we will all be reunited for eternity again. He has since been reunited with his wife Joyce, his parents Anton Sr. And Thelma, and his two brothers Robert and Terry, along with so many other family members and friends who waited at the gate to welcome him in and celebrate his arrival.

Tony is survived by his 2 daughters; Lisa Williams and Denise(John) Renehan. He is also survived by grandchildren; Stephanie (Wayne) Dedina, Chivonne (Corey) Ewing, Blake Ewing, Kileigh (Jake) Kasperek, and John (Jess) Renehan, great grandchildren; Joshua, Ariella, Reighly, Logan, Brayleigh, Michaella, Vivian, Jaxson, Tinleigh and Wayne. He is also survived by two sisters; Pat (Vernon) Sigman and Minnie Clifton, along with one brother Ernie (Carol) Malmquist. He is also survived by his special friend Mary Gerlich. He leaves behind so many other extended family members and friends with many wonderful memories to always remember him by.

Per his wishes, he chose to be cremated.

A celebration luncheon for Tony will be held Friday, February 16th, from 2-6 at the Hobart Community Center @ 111 East Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN.
