Ruth Carlson (Johansson) - Class Of 1929

OBITUARY FROM POST-TRIBUNE, AUGUST 16, 2010

Age 100, of Gary, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at home after a short illness. Ruth had been a Gary resident since 1945 and was born in N. Solberga, Sweden in 1910 to Ernst and Emelia Carlson. She emigrated to America with her parents, 1 brother and 2 sisters in 1912. Taking up residence in Hobart, she graduated from Hobart High School in 1929. In 1941 she married Ivor Powell who was killed in action in France during World War II. In 1945 she married Lars Johansson who was also a WWII veteran and passed away in April of 1992, after 46 years of marriage.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Gideon & his wife Ethel and Kenneth Carlson, sisters: Margaret & her husband, Edward Mellon and Eva & her husband, Claude Cruikshank. Ruth was a lifelong member of the Michigan Avenue Methodist Church where she served in several capacities including Sunday School Superintendent. She was employed at Cruikshank's Auto Service and Broadway Lumber. Ruth is survived by her son, John R. Johansson of Gary, sister-in-law, Mae Carlson, several nieces and one nephew.

Donations can be made to the Michigan Avenue Methodist Church in her memory. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 10 am at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart, with Rev. Michael Cover officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary.
