Charles Southard - Class Of 1945

OBITUARY FROM REDDING RECORD SEARCHLIGHT (REDDING, CA) WEBSITE:

Redding - Charles "Chuck" William Southard, Sr. was born on the family farm in Orono, Maine, April 9, 1927. He died of natural causes on April 14, 2022, surrounded by his family in Coupeville, Washington. After leaving Maine, the Southard family resided in Hobart, Indiana, and Chuck graduated from Valparaiso University. He then completed a Masters degree at Illinois Wesleyan University. Following college, he began a long career of teaching high school English, Choral Music, and Drama.

Chuck met his wife Dorothy (Kimbell) while they were both teaching at Morris Community High School in Morris, Illinois. They were married in 1957, moved to Anderson, CA in 1961 and then to Redding, CA in 1968. Chuck was a long-time teacher at Shasta and Nova High Schools in Redding. He was a talented musician, earning awards for both instrumental and vocal music, and for decades was well-known in Shasta County music circles for his involvement in local operas, chorales, bands, and barbershop quartets. After retirement, Chuck continued to be heavily involved in serving people in the Redding area through church choir directing and other ministries, Community Concert board, Marriage Encounter, State Parks, local museums, the Shasta Cascade Rail Preservation Society, and many other organizations. He will always be remembered especially for his love of the Lord, his wife, and his family.

Chuck is survived by his sons Jim, Charles (Tad) Jr., and Noel, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many dear friends.

A public memorial service will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Redding Christian Fellowship, 2157 Victor Ave. in Redding.
