Mary Handley Obituary

Mary Handley, age 83, of Lake Station, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, April 20th, 2025. She was born on May 29th, 1941, in Gary, Indiana, to Michael and Daisy (Mavros) Halkitis.

Mary is survived by her sons, Michael (Cheryl Selman) Handley, John (Robin) Handley and Stephen (Miranda) Handley; siblings, John Halkitis, Greta (Ron) Schrader, Christine Karas, Frank (Marilyn) Karas, Nick (Christine Bringman) Karas, Paul (Kathy) Karas and Desi Idelette; grandchildren, Desi Handley, Caleb Wright, Drexton Selman, Cody Jarvis, Stephen Handley, Dylan Newbolds, Brandon Newbolds, Erika Gonzales, Eric Gonzales and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Daisy Halkitis; father, Michael Halkitis and brother, Jack Karas.

Mary was a loving mother, a spirited soul, and someone who could light up any room with her humor and warmth. Mary was immensely proud of her Greek heritage, which was a source of joy, strength, and identity throughout her life. Her zest for life and infectious laughter made her the life of every party always ready with a witty comment, a warm smile, or a plate of something delicious to share. Mary spent many years working at Sams Club as a demo specialist, where her ability to connect with people truly shone. Whether it was a longtime customer or a stranger passing by, she had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome, seen, and just a little bit happier. Above all, Mary was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love and humor were constants in the lives of those lucky enough to know her. She leaves behind cherished memories of her kindness, her laughter, and the unmistakable sparkle she brought into the world. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 28th 2025 at 1:00pm at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage, IN 46368. Burial to take place at Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.ee-fh.com.
