Sonny was killed when a semi truck driver thought he had enough time to pull into the lane Sonny was driving in. Sonny then attempted to pass the semi, his car struck the semi’s rear, crossed the center line, hit a guard rails on the highway, swerved back and hit the semi a second time. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
