Services for John David Walter, 72, of Hallsville, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the chapel of Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road. Interment will follow in Noonday Cemetery. Mr. Walter passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010, in Longview.

Mr. Walter was born November 6, 1937, in Gary, Indiana, to James T. and Katherine Lane Walter. He graduated from Hobart Indiana High School. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. Mr. Walter had lived in New Mexico, Colorado, and Illinois while working for Lincoln-Mercury dealerships before moving to Longview in 1972 to work for the local dealership. He owned Walter's Texaco on South High Street from 1974 to 1998.

After his retirement, Mr. Walter loved his Hallsville Kids, working as a Hallsville ISD Bus Driver. He loved senior dances at Hallsville's Gold Hall, history, John Wayne and John Deere. Mr. Walter accomplished his dream of visiting Pearl Harbor in February 2010.

Mr. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas Walter and Chuck Walter; and sisters, Kathleen Kemp and Helen Pilman.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Walter of Hallsville; son and daughter-in-law, John David and Lynn Walter of Houston; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and John Laird of Longview and Julie and Mike Edwards of Gilmer; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Ratna Walter of Hawaii; sister, Mary Hockman of Minnesota; stepson, Dennis Dickard of Longview; stepdaughter, Jerri Ann Mason of Spring; stepson, Robert Nuckolls Jr. of Chalk Hill; grandchildren, Maegan Calkins, Rachel Dobbs, Joe Williams, Matt Laird, Austin Edwards, Lauren Trickett, Joshua Edwards, Indi Walter and Yohan Walter; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Elizabeth, Levi and Caleb; numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Delbert Freeman and wife, Betty, of Longview, Jimmy Freeman of Gilmer, Buddy Freeman and wife, Anna, of Chalk Hill, and Bobby Freeman and wife, Rita, of Chalk Hill; sister-in-law, Helen Walter of Indiana; his buddy, Mason; and his cat, Parker.

The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2010, at Welch Funeral Home.
