OBITUARY FROM NW INDIANA TIMES, OCTOBER 14, 2004:
Easterling M. Allen ("E"), age 93, of Hobart and Florida passed away at his home in Lantana, Florida on Sunday, October 10, 2004. Mr. Allen, Known to his friends and family as "E" was born on Feb.6, 1911, to Frank B.and Annie Allen in Paoli, Oklahoma. His family moved to Hobart in 1918. "E" graduated from Hobart High School in 1930 and went on to DePauw University in Greencastle, IN after receiving acadamic and athletic sholarships. He graduated from De Pauw University in 1934 with a BA degree in Economics. He retired from Inland Steel with 37 years of service in 1974. "E" was active in civic affairs serving as Hobart City councilman for four terms from 1960-1975. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Hobart. The Hobart Lions Club Honored "E" in recognition of 50 years of membership. "E" always had time for conversation with anyone anywhere on any subject."E" married his high school sweetheart, Mary Souder, in 1935. "E" and Mary made their home on Garfield St. in Hobart and built a retirement winter home on Hypoluxo Island, Lantana, Florida in 1971 where they lived during the winter months for 25 years. "E" and Mary thoroughly enjoyed the seasonal change from Hobart to Florida The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1996. Mary Allen passed away 1998.
"E" will be greatly missed by his survivors: two sons, Robert (Zeta) Allen of Hobart and Bruce (Shirley) Allen of Lantana, Florida; one daughter, Donna Monfort of Champaign,IL; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Lisa) Allen, Eric (Sanda) Allen, Stuart (Kathy) Allen of Hobart, Melinda (Michael) Estes of FL, Renee (Gary Johnson) Monfort of IL, Barton Allen and Marnie Allen of FL; 13 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Justin, Paige, Nathan,Logan, Collin, Claire, Michael , Brandon, Garrett, Kathryn, Meredith and Shea; sister-in-laws, Mary G. Allen of Maryland,Grace Allen of FL and Helen Reeder of Hobart; many nieces and nephews. "E" was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, parents, two brothers, Hardee Allen and Bryan Allen; one sister, Edna Anderson, brother-in-laws, Bernard Anderson and Ernest Reeder. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hobart Lions Club or the First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 16, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Larry Whitehead officiating from Kraft Funeral Services, 370 N. County Line Rd., Hobart.
