Norman Carl Berndt - Class Of 1937

OBITUARY FROM NW INDIANA TIMES, JULY 23, 2009:

Norman Carl Berndt passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the age of 89 years in Valparaiso, IN. He was born on his farm in Hobart, IN on July 24, 1919, to Charles E. and Emma (Lute) Berndt. He attended Hobart High School and was employed at Englehart Construction, US Steel, Reynolds Metals Plastics, and Baker's Wholesale Hardware in Gary, IN. His love, however, was his profession, that of farming which he enjoyed most of his life. He spent all but five years of his life on his farm. For three years he was a farm helper on Truitt's Farm in Hobart and the last two as a resident at Whispering Pines Health Care in Valparaiso, IN.

Mr. Berndt is survived by his daughters: Charlotte Berndt of Hobart and Carole (Dennis) Lewis of Wheatfield, IN; and his granddaughters: Amanda (Ben) King of Hobart and Stephanie Berndt of Chicago, IL; as well as many cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lorraine (Watters) Berndt; his parents; and his brother, Ervin Harry Berndt.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was a member. Visitation will be at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th Street, Hobart, IN, on Friday, July 24, 2009 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6240 Grand Blvd., Hobart at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2009 with Rev. Frederic Lams officiating. Burial at Evergreen Memorial Park. There will also be visitation at the church from 9:30-10:00 a.m. www.burnsfuneral.com
