James Meredith Mundell, Sr. - Class Of 1934

OBITUARY FROM POST-TRIBUNE, AUGUST 17, 2004:

JAMES MEREDITH MUNDELL, SR. Age 87 years, of West Lafayette, IN, died at Heritage Healthcare at 12:50 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2004. He had been in ill health several years. Born in Hobart, IN, September 2, 1916, he was reared in Lake County, IN, graduating from Hobart High School in 1934 and attending I.U. Gary and P.U. Calumet campuses. He was employed at the Gary Works of U.S. Steel for 36 years as a design engineer in the blast furnaces and power and fuel departments, where he developed four U.S. patents. From 1972 until 1976 he worked for Superior Engineering in Hammond. He served in the Army/Air Corps during World War II in North Africa and Italy for 3 years. He married Geneva Haddis September 2, 1937 in Crown Point, and she preceded him in death. He then married Rosalie A. Toering November 22, 1942 in Gary and she preceded him in death. On January 25, 1975, he married Alice E. (Kline) Lovell in Lafayette and she survives. A lifelong Republican, Mr. Mundell held numerous positions in the party. He was a former Lake County Councilman for 12 years, a member of the steering committee for incorporation of the town of Merrillville in 1971, and chaired the finance committee after the incorporation. He was the Ross Township precinct Chair from 1961 until 1972. In 1972, he was the campaign chairman for 2nd District Congressman Earl Landgrebe's primary re-election campaign. He also attended numerous Republican conventions as delegate. Mr. Mundell was a life member of the Western States Blast Furnace and Coke Association, the 414th Bomb Squadron Association, Lafayette Lions Club, served as a Home Hospital Auxiliary Red Coat, enjoyed gardening, traveling, raising orchids, reading, sports, especially Purdue, crossword puzzles and needlework. He won numerous awards, prizes and ribbons for his cross-stitch and needlework.
 
Surviving beside his wife are 2 daughters, Melody (Steven) Naarcisso, Longmont, CO, and Marilyn (Richard) Niksch of Florissant, MO; son, James M. (Phyllis) Mundell, Jr. of Crystal Lake, IL; 2 sisters, Sarah (Richard "Mal") Boruff of Hobart, IN, Shirley (Henry) Stozek of Hobart, IN; and a brother, Donald (Jean) Mundell of Hobart, IN.
 
Graveside services will be held at the old Hobart Cemetery, Hobart, IN Sunday, August 22, 2004, 2 p.m. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren. Preceded in death by 2 daughters, Meredith Ann Henley and Jennifer Dobos, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Memorials may be made to Lafayette Lions Club Trust, Leader Dog Program, P.O.
