OBITUARY FROM NW INDIANA TIMES, APRIL 2, 2014:

Bernadette (Mrs. Robert) Sohn of Griffith, IN passed away at age 87 on March 28, 2014 after a brief illness associated with a recent medical condition while spending the winter months with her son in Texas.

Bernie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert, of nearly 50 years (longtime Band Director in Griffith); and a brother, Robert Griffin, Jr. (formerly of Littleton, CO). She is survived by three children: Michael (Carol) of Kennewick, WA, Marjorie (Stan) of Pendleton, OR, and Richard (Linda) of Midlothian, TX; five grandsons: Chris (Natsumi) currently living in Japan, Matt of Richland, WA, Andy (Marcy) of Richardson, TX, Brandon of Little Elm, TX, and Nick of Midlothian, TX; and one great grandson, Philo, living in Japan.

Bernie was born in Chicago, IL and raised in Hobart, IN. She was a graduate of University of Michigan with a degree in Music Education. Bernie lived in Griffith since 1950 and taught instrumental music in the elementary schools of Griffith for a number of years. She was a longtime member of the "Rusty Pipes" Community Band in Hobart and the First United Methodist Church in Griffith. She was previously active in Girl Scouts, Job's Daughters, Order of Eastern Star, and numerous activities with her late husband related to instrumental music throughout northern Indiana.

Funeral arrangements are complete, but an informal get together to remember Bernie and celebrate her life will be held at a future date in Griffith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to your local Hospice organization in her memory.
