In 1940 he and his parents and brother Vernon lived on a farm they were renting for seven dollars a month on State Road 58 (now 158?) in Indian Creek Township, Lawrence County, IN, near Fayetteville. His brother worked as a laborer on their farm.

In 1950 he and his first wife Patricia lived in a house at 2606 Crest Street in Altamont, OR. He worked as a yardman for a railroad.
