Richard Wells, age 94, of Bloomington, passed away on Friday, July 2, 2022, at IU Health Hospital, Bloomington. Mr. Wells was of the Methodist faith.
He was a member of the United States Army and a member of the American Legion. He worked in the steel mills in Gary, was a teacher in the Gary school district most of his life teaching Government, and he also served as State Superintendent of Public Instruction for two terms. After his retirement, Mr. Wells enjoyed his construction and rental business, fishing, and traveling.
"Richard led a purpose filled life. His eye was always on the next day. He has run the race of life here on Earth, and he now has won the prize of resurrection in a Heavenly paradise, God's original purpose for us. His purpose will not change (Isaiah 55:10-13). In Genesis, He put man and woman in the Garden of Eden to live in paradise conditions here on Earth. Our human visions of Heaven are what we cling to, to live and uphold God's expectations as Christians. I truly believe and pray that is still His unchanging purpose for Richard and all God's children. Let the Heavens rejoice, let the Earth be glad." - Jeanette Wells.
Born on April 24, 1928, in Hobart, he was the son of Simeon and Pearl Wasson Wells, both of whom preceded him in death. On June 2, 1951, he married Jeanette Lea Blake and she survives in Indianapolis.
Survivors also include three sons: Douglas Wells of Indianapolis, Scott (Sher) Wells of El Cajon, California, and Brian Wells of El Cajon, California; and one daughter, Yvonne Wells of West Harrison, Indiana. Besides his parents, Mr. Wells was also preceded in death by four brothers: Charles Wells, Howard Wells, Edward Wells, and Robert Wells; and one sister, Helen Wells.
Funeral services for Richard Wells will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown.
Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47 and Vietnam Vets 7. Memorials may be given to Operation Smile. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the caring staff at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
