Arthur (Art) Hamilton - Class Of 1947

Arthur W. “Art” Hamilton, age 92, a life-long resident of Hobart, IN, passed away in Jesup, GA on Saturday, April 23, 2022.

Art was born on July 7, 1929 in Hobart, IN to the late Cecil, Sr. and Alice (nee Gibbs) Hamilton. He was a graduate of Hobart High School, Class of 1947. Art attended Indiana University and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in business. He proudly served as a Marine for 5 years during the Korean War, based at Paris Island, SC. He met his future wife, Juanita Tiegs (also a Marine), when he was asked to drive her home to Wisconsin for leave. They married on January 10, 1953 and were together for 66 years until Juanita’s passing in May of 2019.

Early in Art’s career, he taught math at Mundell Elementary School and applied math at Hobart Junior High. He also managed purchasing, accounting, sales and personnel at the family business, Hamilton Cabinets, located in Hobart. He went on to oversee day-to-day operations at All in One Party Rentals, eventually purchasing the company and running it for many years until his retirement at age 86. He always loved sports, playing on both the Hobart Brickie Basketball and Football teams, then coaching and supporting youth sports programs, while enjoying golf, bowling, and snow skiing. In later years, he continued to enjoy cheering on his favorite teams on TV.

Art was a long-time member of 1st United Methodist Church in Hobart and was involved as a Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He was very active in the community, serving over the years as a member of the Merrillville Optimists, Hobart Jaycees, Hobart Rotary Club, Hobart City Council, Hobart School Board, and the Hobart YMCA, even running for the position of Mayor of Hobart. He held office in most of these organizations and won state awards in several.

Art was a hard-working man and was very committed to his family and community alike. He was a real people person; he had a great sense of humor and liked to have fun, enjoy sports, and meet new people. Art was a dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be missed by all.

Art is survived by his children: Cindi (Tim) Otto, Kent (Fran) Hamilton, and Lyn Alice Hamilton; grandchildren: Sara Otto, Lauren (David) Zahrn, Melissa (Eric) Rogers, Benjamin (Sara) Wellsand, Nicole (Clifton) Hart and Issac Wellsand; numerous great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Art is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Juanita; parents: Cecil Sr. and Alice; infant son: Bradley David; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert (Asoni), Herb (Ricky), Cecil, Jr “Bud” (Shirley), and Charles (Avis) Hamilton.

Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Homes, Hobart Chapel (600 W. Old Ridge Rd, Hobart) on Monday, May 2, 2022 from 9:30-11:00 A.M.
