Wilda "Beth" Olson (Carter) - Class Of 1949

OBITUARY FROM FELLER & CLAR FUNERAL HOME (AUBURN, IN) WEBSITE:

Wilda Elizabeth “Beth” (Olson) Carter, 89, of Auburn, Indiana, formerly of Walkerton, Indiana, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 30, 2021. She is survived by three daughters, Laura (Philip) Chase of Auburn, Indiana; Lynn (Randy) Millikan of Walla Walla, Washington; and Susan Adams of Auburn, Indiana; sixteen grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband William “Bill”; a daughter, Sara; a grandson, Johnny Chase; and a great-grandson, Teddy Lehman.

Beth was born September 26, 1931, at home in Hobart, Indiana, as the only child of William and Mary “Abimael” (Johnson) Olson.  As a teenager, she became an accomplished pianist winning several awards. She was valedictorian of her 1949 class at Hobart High School and, after graduation, earned an RN degree at West Suburban School of Nursing, in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1952.  Beth then earned her bachelor’s degree in 1954 at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. While at Wheaton, she met and married Bill Carter. After medical school and an internship, Bill began family practice in Walkerton, Indiana, where the Carters lived for more than 40 years. While their daughters were at home, Beth was a homemaker and hosted many gatherings.   Beth was very active at Koontz Lake Missionary Church--playing the piano and organ, teaching children’s Sunday school and leading ladies’ Bible studies.  Once their daughters were raised, Beth worked as Director of In-Service at Miller’s Merry Manor in Walkerton for about 10 years. In retirement, Bill and Beth moved to Auburn, Indiana, in 2006, to live with daughter Laura’s family because of Bill’s illness.  Beth continued to live in Auburn after Bill’s death in 2008 where she attended Grabill Missionary Church and served as a pianist. In 2014, Beth invited her daughter Sue to share her apartment at Laura’s house.  Everyone who knew Beth recognized the power of Jesus Christ in her life from her great compassion, her patient listening ear, her endless generosity, and her faithfulness to finish whatever she committed to do.  She loved sending cards, reading a good mystery, solving puzzles, and studying her Bible every day.
