JOHN R. WEBDELL, SR., age 93, a longtime Hobart resident, passed away Friday, April 4, 2025. He was born on September 26, 1931, to the late Harry and Veronica Webdell. John graduated from Hobart High School, Class of 1949. John worked as a union warehouse manager for Gary Office and retired in 1998. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #142 for 23 years. After retirement, he volunteered for 18 years for the St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary. John was a devoted and faithful member of Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church in New Chicago, where he served as an Usher, a bartender at the church hall and helped in whatever way he could. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather, uncle and friend.
John is survived by his 2 sons, John (Jan) Webdell, Jr. and Deacon Dale (Kim) Webdell; 2 daughters, Karen (Richard) Rogala and Jane (Stephen) Seber; 8 grandchildren, William Webdell, Marcus Rogala, Joseph Webdell, Tricia VanVolkenburgh, Edward Webdell, Daniel Pancer, Benjamin Webdell, and Susan Kallok; 19 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dolores Dugan; brother-in-law, Ronald (Brenda) Bysiek; several nieces, nephews and other loving family.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (nee Bysiek); brother, Harry Jr.; 3 sisters, Ruth, Eleanor and Dorothy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knights of Columbus, Council #12149, 356 W. 700 N., Valparaiso, In 46385, for the Baby Box fundraising project for South Haven Fire Department.
There will be a visitation for John, Sr. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. with a 3:30 p.m. St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary Service and a 7:30 p.m. Rosary Service at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 10, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with additional visitation that morning at 9:00 a.m. all at Assumption B.V.M., 3530 Illinois St., New Chicago. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery.
