Doris Jean Papke (Blaney) - Class Of 1950

OBITUARY FROM BURNS FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

Doris R. Blaney, age 82 of Hobart, passed away on June 28, 2015. Doris grew up in Hobart in the family homestead built by her grandfather in 1885 and returned to raise her children there. She was very proud of her family and Hobart history. She loved to cook and entertain in her home and loved music.

Doris graduated from Hobart High School in 1950 and graduated from Indiana University in 1955 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She received her Master’s at University of Chicago in 1959 and a Doctorate from IU in higher education in 1973. She was a former Dean and Professor of Nursing at IU Northwest and was a former President of the Indiana State Nurses Association, Visiting Nurses Association and other nursing organizations. She served as a nursing leader on the local, national and international levels. She was also a published author. She was a seasoned traveler, including nursing exchanges in China, South Korea, and the Soviet Union. She was a lifelong member of Augustana Lutheran Church, a member of the Portage Tri-Kappa, and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

Doris was preceded in death by her sister – Marjorie Stangbye; brother – Frank Papke; Survivors include her husband of 59 years – Karter R. “Bob” Blaney, who she married on March 10, 1956; two sons – James (Stephanie) Blaney of Brentwood, TN and Thomas (Maria) Blaney of Prosper, TX.; four grandchildren – Triston Blaney and Sydni Gause of Brentwood, TN., Thomas and Bianca Blaney of Prosper, TX; one brother – Ralph Papke of Rochelle, IL.; many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Friends may visit with Doris’ family from 2-8 on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at Burns Funeral Home, 701 East 7th Street, Hobart. Funeral service will be Wednesday, July 1, directly at Augustana Lutheran Church, 207 Kelly Street, Hobart; Doris will lie in state from 10 – 11 with the funeral service following immediately at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
