Fred Larson - Class Of 1944

OBITUARY FROM REES FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

Fred Russell Larson, a centenarian whose life was defined by service, faith, and family, passed away peacefully in Hobart on April 8, 2026, at the age of 100. Born on January 29, 1926, in Creston, Iowa, Fred was the son of the late Oscar and Mabel (Swanker) Larson. A proud member of the "Greatest Generation," Fred served his country during World War II as a veteran of the United States Air Force. His commitment to his fellow servicemen continued throughout his life as a dedicated member of the American Legion Post in Hobart. Following his military service, Fred earned a bachelor’s degree in history and embarked on a successful career as a computer programmer, eventually retiring from US Steel. As a pioneer in the digital age, Fred applied his sharp mind to a field that transformed the world, yet he remained grounded in the simple joys of life. Fred was a man of quiet strength and unwavering integrity. He will be remembered most for his remarkably kind spirit; he was a man who didn't judge others and lived with a heart full of gratitude for every kindness shown to him. His gentle nature made him beloved by everyone who met him, and he shared a special, intuitive bond with animals, who were naturally drawn to his peaceful presence.

His community and his faith were the cornerstones of his life. Fred was a faithful and longtime member of Augustana Lutheran Church and served his community through his involvement with the Gideon Society. He took deep pride in his Hobart roots and the life he built there.

Fred was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy May Larson.

He is survived by his children: Pamela Ann (Keith) Addison, Judith Kay (Jim) Sikora, Connie Lee (Dan) Abelseth, Glen Allen (Jean) Larson, James Eric (Shelly Starbuck) Larson, and Alice Lynn (Nick) Dawson. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and dear friends.

Visitation for Fred will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Augustana Lutheran Church, 207 Kelly Street, Hobart, Indiana 46342. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm.
