Jennie Kaye Gilbert (Paterson) - Class Of 1948

OBITUARY INFORMATION FROM CHICAGO TRIBUNE WEBSITE:

JENNIE KAYE PATERSON Born November 2, 1930 in Chicago, IL, passed away unexpectedly but very peacefully late on October 11, 2007 while recovering and in rehab from a broken leg. She had dinner, watched some TV, had the usual good chat with her nurse, brushed her teeth and went to bed for the night. A short time later she passed away without pain or long suffering into eternity surely greeted with outstretched arms from her husband, Bill, son, Billy, mother and father, Bernice and Elmer Gilbert, and a host of other angels. While we didn’t want her to leave us so soon, God graciously took her in His most gentle way.

Born in Chicago, IL, Jennie spent most of her life in Hobart, IN. In addition to being a loving wife and caring mother of two boys, she was a generous hostess. Taking on the tradition from her mother, Jennie’s home became the place to be for holidays, the annual women’s club party, family reunions, and any other excuse she could come up with to get folks together for good food and fun. Jennie had a strong artistic talent inherited from her father putting it to use in decorating her home, creating elaborate doll houses, sprucing up her wheel chair with fancy seasonal covers, and assembling elaborate holiday displays.

Jennie fought a courageous fight with Multiple Sclerosis for over fifty years never letting the disease stop her from moving forward. Jennie’s support through the years came from a host of earthly angels that she has left behind: her sisters, Sylvia Krafft, Carol Gilbert and Barbara Chesnut; her best friends, Cathy and Loraine; her home caretaker, Tami; home helper, Polly; her physician, Dr. Prasad; members of her life long church, Hobart First United Methodist Church; and other friends and neighbors. Specials thanks to Lonnie for taking care of (and putting up with) Jennie’s best buddy and companion, Reggie, while she was away from home.

Jennie will be missed by her sisters; her son, Bob; his wife, Lezlie; and their children, Jasmine, Blake and Holly from Cypress, TX; her granddaughter, Amy and her husband, Scott; and their three children from Oregon; her grandson, Bill and his wife, Mary Patrice of Hobart; and her granddaughter, Stephanie and her daughter.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 18 at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. led by Pastor Jonathan Gosser. There will be time during the memorial service for anyone who wants to tell their story about Jennie’s life. Jennie loved pink flowers if you want to send or bring some to her memorial service. She was also a supporter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society if you would like to make a donation to honor her life.
