Paul A. Meeks, 72, died Thursday [October 10, 2002].

He was born April 16, 1930, in West Frankfort, Ill. An Air Force veteran, and a retired pilot, he was a 20-year resident of North Las Vegas.

He is survived by his two daughters, Gina Jones of Smyrna, GA and Lexy Petrick of Marietta, GA; brother Harold Meeks of South Bend, IN; sisters, June Greimann of Indianapolis, IN, Nancy Burks of Anderson, MO, Sara Malanca of Camp Verde, AZ, Esther Wiltbank of Eager, AZ, and Jerilyn Strande of Crestview, FL; and one grandchild.

Paul Meeks was preceded in death by his parents, Avery James Meeks (1999) and Lola Marie Clark Meeks (1978), and sister, JoAnn Minnie Meeks Hull (1979).

Captain Paul A. Meeks was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. In the September 1970 issue of AIRMAN, Official Magazine of the U.S. Air Force, Paul was highlighted in the article 'Sandy One - You're On Fire' for his bravery and heroism in saving Col. William A. Jones, III. Jones (Sandy 1) was a lieutenant colonel at the time and commander of the 602d Special Operations Squadron. Paul was his wingman (Sandy 2) in a harrowing mission, with several other USAF pilots, to save two crewmembers from a downed F-4 Phantom, 22 miles west-northwest of Dong Hoi, North Vietnam.
