Virgil L. Cornett, passed away at St. Anthony Hospice in Crown Point. He retired after 36 years as a loading Clerk from United States Steel Corp., Gary Works,Sheet and Tin Division. Virgil proudly served in the 972nd signal corp. in the U.S. Army during WWII.The Central Pacific Base Command awarded the 972nd Signal Service Battalion the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque (later renamed the Meritorious Unit Commendation), for superior performance of exceptionally difficult tasks for the period March 1, 1945, to April 30, 1945. The battalion also earned the Central Pacific campaign streamer for the period 1941-1943.
Mr Cornett was a member of Southlake Christian Church, he was a past Master of the Gary Masonic Lodge #677 F. and A.M. also a member of the York Rite Scottish Rite 32nd degree, Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #314, Order of the Amaranth, Knights Templar, Orak Shrine, Demolay Advisor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Cornett; brothers: Elmer, Delbert and Earl Cornett, Clarence and William Truett; and great-grandson, Braden Xavier Cornett. Virgil is survived by two children, fraternal twins; son, Charles (Kathleen) Cornett and daughter, Collette (Michael) Festa, both of Crown Point; six grandchildren: Shawn (Shannon) Cornett, Matthew (Sherri) Cornett, Heather (Adam) Calfee, Patrick (Kelli) Cornett, John Festa and Charles Festa; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Lester (Marion) Cornett and Everett Truett, both of Valparaiso; one sister, Betty (Jack) Blossom of Chesterton.
When the family lived in the Aetna neighborhood of Gary, Virgil and his wife Marie donated their time to the Aetna Little League. Virgil was a kind and gentle man with a great sense of humor. His kind spirit lives on in his two children.
