Stories my Dad told me: (by daughter Nancy Meadows)
***************************************
Growing up during the Depression in the 1920's and 1930's was difficult. He was the only child of his parents although he did have several cousins in the area. During the winter, when Lake George (Hobart, Indiana) would freeze over, he and several of his buddies would spend the day ice skating. Before he left the house to go skating, his Mother would give him a potato wrapped in a precious piece of tin foil (which he had to be sure to bring home to reuse). He and his buddies would build a small fire on the lakeshore and put their potatoes on the coals, then spend a few hours skating and warming up when too cold. When they got hungry they would eat their potato. Occasionally that was Dad's only meal for the day.
