HOBART -- William B. Ondrovich took great pride in meeting his civic responsibilities.
"Bill never missed a Hobart City Council meeting or school board meeting," said his wife, Evelyn Ondrovich. She said he took an active interest in efforts to clean Lake George and made a point of expressing his views.
"He wanted what was right (for Hobart)," his wife said. Mr. Ondrovich, 83, a Hobart resident for more than 60 years, died Sept. 13 at his home.
He was known to many in the neighborhood for his willingness to make a stand, help those in need and be a loving family man, his wife said.
Mr. Ondrovich often plowed snow and assisted neighbors needing household repairs, and was never too busy to spend quality time playing with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Great Poppie."
"When the kids were young, Bill would make a train of wagons to pull with his garden tractor. They would go all around our house...the neighborhood," she said.
Mr. Ondrovich also enjoyed the camaraderie of members in the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club, tinkering around his home and traveling.
Mr. Ondrovich retired in 1979 from U.S. Steel Gary Works Sheet and Tin Mill with 43 years of service. He was a member of St. Bridget Church of in Hobart, Northwest Indiana Retirees and the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn; two sons, William P. Ondrovich of LaPorte and Richard A. (Marilyn) Ondrovich of Valparaiso; one daughter, Joyce L. Ondrovich (Bill Pritchard) of Portage; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister and one brother.
Services were Sept. 16 at the Rees Funeral Home - Hobart Chapel, with the Rev. Dominic V. Bertino officiating.
Interment took place at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
