Carman W. Ponader, 94, of Brown County, died at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2009 at his home. Mr. Ponader was a machinist at McGills Manufacturing in Valparaiso prior to World War II. He retired from the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He was a 1951 graduate of Valparaiso University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a teacher in the Porter and Lake County Schools where he taught science, math and industrial arts. He was a model maker of trains and ships and built his own home and sea-worthy boats.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike in Columbus with The Rev. Martha D. Ponader officiating. Calling will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The committal service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) Friday at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso. Born in Bremen, IN July 8, 1914, he was the son of Carl Frederick and Anna Leathe Carman Ponader; he married Evelyn Gardner July 4, 1942. He later married H. Marie Bailey Irvine on March 26, 1982. Mr. Ponader is survived by his wife, H. Marie Ponader; daughters, Jennifer (Bob) Cooper of Ellettsville and Josette (Randy) Modlin of Wilmington, NC; step-children, Nancy (Roger) Cupka of Auburn and Don Irvine of Washington State; a half brother, Wayne C. (The Rev.Martha) Ponader of Fort Myers, FL; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, eight step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Ponader was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Evelyn Ponader on October 1, 1979; a daughter, Priscilla Ponader and a brother, Lawrence C. Ponader.
