Jo Nell Whitaker, age 95 of Portage, IN passed away peacefully on October 23, 2023.  She was born in Beech Creek, KY on July 20, 1928 to Taylor and Eurie Wood.

She is survived by her daughter, Carmen (Larry) Winters and son, Jim (Kathy) Whitaker; grandsons: Mike Winters and Brian (Destiny) Whitaker; granddaughter: Sherry Whitaker Budziak; four great-granddaughters: Ashley and Sarah Budziak and Shelby and Kaitlyn Whitaker; nieces: Marietta (Lee) Morgan of Asheville, NC, Wanda (Ted) Howard of St. Petersburg, FL, and Patricia Clark of Knightdale, NC.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Raliegh C. “Lehman” and grandson, Greg Winters.

Jo Nell was a devoted wife and mother and a faithful Christian of the Church of Christ.  She taught the children’s Bible classes for many years.

She worked for the School City of Hobart as a custodian from 1961 to 1982.  She and her husband then moved to Kentucky and she worked for four years in the jewelry department of Walmart.  In 2003 she and her husband moved to Portage, IN.

Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Homes, Hobart Chapel (600 W Old Ridge Rd., Hobart) on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 11:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.  A Funeral Service will follow visitation immediately beginning at 2:00 P.M.  After cremation takes place, Jo Nell will be laid to rest in Kentucky.
