ARTICLE FROM THE NW INDIANA TIMES, AUGUST 5, 2011:

Hobart man inspired many through coaching

Walter Nabhan was a tough high school football coach who expected a lot from his teams but also cared about his players' lives off the field, said his son, Randy Nabhan.

"He was a tough guy, a Bobby Knight type," Nabhan said. "He demanded kids be accountable. But he always listened to their problems, and years later so many people credited him with being a mentor."

Walter Nabhan, of Hobart and formerly of Gary, died July 3. He had been a teacher, coach and administrator for William A. Wirt High School in Miller and ended his career as a Hobart High administrator. He was a World War II veteran.

He is survived by Lael Jean Nabhan, his wife of almost 70 years.

He began his coaching career at Wirt in 1949, staying until 1970. During his last three seasons of coaching, his teams went 29-2.

After he retired from Hobart High in the early 1980s, he enjoyed three decades of retirement, Randy Nabhan said.

He loved sports and golfed, he said. He also loved to travel.

"He was always active," his son said. "He enjoyed life and did the things he didn't get to do while he was working."

Nabhan admired his father for his values, even when standing up for what he believed in came with personal repercussions.

In the late 1960s, the Wirt football teams had back-to-back undefeated seasons. On the last game of that second season, an ineligible Wirt player came in at the end of the game.

No one noticed but Nabhan, who reported it to the state officials, causing his team to forfeit the game and give up the undefeated season.

"No one would've known about it, but he still reported it," Randy Nabhan said. "He was an honest man."
